All of last week, I was in search of a perfect laptop. A laptop which is ideal for IT students and especially for cyber security and ethical hacking majors. What are the essential feature of a perfect laptop then, yes for IT students. Even though , I really haven't figured it out exactly, I have come up with all the important factors to consider before investing on a laptop. And here I have the beginners list:
A. Paying attention to the processor is the key. Processor relating to the CPU of the laptop is considered the brain. The powerful the processor is , the more task the laptop can perform with ease. But, here is the caveat - powerful processor also tends to use more power which should imply the battery life. Laptop which gives relatively longer battery life is advantageous in many fronts to an IT student. Therefore, choose a laptop with good processor but it does not have to be a laptop with ultra powerful processor. As of this writing, Intel Core I5 and equivalence is the least one can go to, Intel Core I7 being perfect considering everything for an IT student.
B. The random access memory (RAM) is another important factor to consider. An IT student needs to download many applications. He/she is required to have good understanding of many different operating systems - atleast of Windows and Linux. Virtual box is therefore a necessity where we need to allocate memory. To make the long story short, my friends atleast 8 GB RAM is the must while buying a new laptop , preferably 16 GB is ideal. (Get into the cache memory aspect if you want to geek out more).
C. HDD or SSD - The main memory comes in two format hard disk drive (HDD) and solid state drive (SSD). Hard disk is an actual disk whereas SSD uses semi-conductor chips. Hard disk though bit cheaper is old school with disadvantages like making sound, producing heat and being relatively slower than SSD. What I am implying is - buy a laptop with a SSD - min 256 gb.
D. Graphics - My friends, graphics/GPU is mostly associated with gaming computers but it is also important feature in Artificial Intelligence (A.I). Graphics is also needed for video editing. In the nutshell, we can get away with little graphics in our laptop for IT studies but ideally for better performance and versatility atleast 2gb graphics card is needed with 4gb being ideal.
E. Portability - Since, we will be carrying laptops to the campus and everywhere else we go where we may be needing our laptop. It needs to be portable, not super heavy - ideally metallic casings with no larger than 15 inch monitor.
F. Battery Life - The whole idea of carrying a laptop lies in the ease of usage. Ask the battery life of the laptop you will be buying before making that final decision. 5-7 hours minimum battery life is preferred.
F. Pricing - I am putting pricing at the end because truly we need to consider other aspects of the laptop before considering the price.
These were some of the aspects I have considered on my laptop hunt. Then, there are companies we need to choose from . ASUS is a strong contender so is the Lenovo. I have heard and found that ACER could offer value budget wise. Macbook has been the safest and most reliable option for almost everybody. It is important to really understand what we really want, and how the laptops available in the market is going to fulfill our needs rather than to jump right away for the most popular and the most expensive option.
These all said and written, I haven't bought my perfect laptop yet. I will update you all with what I end up buying and how pleased I am with my decision after I make that decision.
This is it for this post. Be well, stay connected. Love you all my friends !
I ended up buying Acer predator Helios 300, RTX ,Intel Core I7 10th Generation, 512 GB SSD and 16 GB RAM. So far so good my friends !
